LLE Review, Volume 89 25 Introduction As part of the U.S. Inertial Confinement Fusion Program, LLE plans to implode deuterium–tritium (DT)–charged microspheres. These microspheres are filled with high-pressure deuterium and tritium gas under cryogenic conditions. The spheres are then stored and transferred as needed to the target chamber (located in an adjacent room) under vacuum and at temperatures near 20 K. LLE is licensed to handle up to 10,000 Ci of tritium, but site release target is less than 1 Ci per year.
